WA launches swimming pool water optimisation calculator
Western Australian Minister for Sport and Recreation Terry Waldron has launched a software tool that allows managers of aquatic facilities to quickly determine potential savings in dollars and resources when looking at minor and major changes to water management in their facilities.
Minister Waldron launched the Leisure Industry Water Optimisation Calculator (LIWOC) yesterday (Tuesday 16th August) at an Environmental Health Association (Australia) seminar being held as part of the LIWA Aquatics state conference in Fremantle.
As part of the launch, David Deeley of the WA Centre for Sport and Recreation Research (CSSR) explained the development of LIWOC as a tool for assisting planning, monitoring and decision making related to water efficiency in pool environments.
In Western Australia there are over 130 public aquatic centres that provide significant benefit in terms of community development, sport, health and fitness.
To gain a perspective of water usage, just one aquatic centre, Beatty Park Leisure Centre, holds 4,200 kilolitres of water that must be constantly filtered, disinfected and turned over (replaced) to ensure it is environmentally safe for public bathing.
The LIWOC research project resulted in the development of a simple but effective decision support system, widely available to support aquatic centre managers in their exploration of various scenarios of water and energy-efficiency gains, system upgrades and management improvements.
As importantly, the project has resulted in collaborative relationships between the leaders in the aquatic industry, the Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation and the Water Corporation of WA.
