Brisbane City Council opens new outdoor gyms

Brisbane City Council’s ongoing commitment to providing exercise equipment in its parks - which already sees 90 of its open spaces equipped with outdoor gyms - has seen the recent addition of two installations in Toowong.

Provided by a_space, the new outdoor gyms in Anzac Park and Perrin Park, feature equipment from the Victorian-based company’s Fit for Parks and Fitness Extra Ranges to provide a mix of equipment and exercise opportunities.

In a website post, a_space explain that both locations feature “static and dynamic equipment (with the) Council placing an emphasis on providing free-to-use equipment to help promote inclusion and wellness.

“A key consideration for Council when choosing equipment for these parks, was the accessibility and inclusive element of a range that would suit everyone - the young and old and everyone in between.

“Thanks to a_space easy to read signage and QR codes with links to instructional videos, anyone can use the equipment even if they have no prior knowledge of where to start.”

Having installed its first outdoor gym in 2014, the Council’s open space strategy encourages residents and visitors to “exercise and get fit outdoors for free”.

In a statement, the Council advise “exercise equipment is different in each park, ranging from simple, static equipment for chin-ups, sit-ups and step-ups, to new interactive and movable equipment with cardio and resistance features - similar to indoor fitness equipment - such as rowing and stepping machines.

“Many pieces of equipment have instructions for use.”

Park activation has been a key aim of the Council in recent years, with outdoor exercise equipment joining such initiatives as all-abilities play equipment, free deck chairs and Wi-Fi in the city’s public green spaces.
