Brimbank plans for additional indoor sports facilities

Victoria’s Brimbank City Council is planning for additional indoor sports facilities so that residents who play indoor sport across the municipality can continue to access quality facilities, both now and in the future.

Council adopted the Indoor Sports Facilities Feasibility Study 2020 final report at its Ordinary Council Meeting on 21st April 2020, following consultation and community feedback.

Brimbank Mayor, Georgina Papafotiou said the study acknowledges the need for additional indoor facilities for sports including netball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and futsal within Brimbank.

Mayor Papafotiou advises “Council acknowledges that sport and physical activity is so important for a healthy, vibrant and connected community – especially in Brimbank, where our residents have much lower rates of physical activity than in other parts of Australia.

“We know that more indoor sports facilities are needed, particularly in the south of Brimbank like Sunshine, where much of our future population growth is expected.”

The study looks at current and future supply and demand for indoor sports facilities for people across Brimbank, as well as in six neighbouring areas in western Melbourne.

There are 39 full size indoor courts across Brimbank at a total of 29 venues, including seven Council-owned courts, 28 courts at schools or universities and four courts on private land. Across the wider western region, there is a total of 188 indoor courts.

Mayor Papafotiou explains “residents in neighbouring municipalities often use the same sports facilities, which is why the study looks at western Melbourne as a whole.

“We want to ensure everyone who Brimbank has access to top-quality sports facilities, and that all residents have opportunities to be healthy and active. So, we’ll be looking at a range of options to get the best outcomes for our community.”

The study looks at ways to increase access to indoor sports facilities – from partnering with schools and neighbouring councils, to better utilising existing courts and building new sports facilities in Brimbank.

A number of local residents, sporting clubs and state sporting bodies made submissions during public consultation, which were considered in the final study.
