Billy the wombat invites mates to join him at wildlife centre for 2016

A young common wombat called Billy, being cared for by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) rangers at Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre at The Gap in Brisbane’s north-west, is looking forward to welcoming new native animals ‘friends’ during the coming year.

QPWS is looking to increase the type and number of native animals on display at the Discovery Centre through 2016.

Explaining the development, Queensland Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef, Dr Steven Miles stated “we’re hoping Billy and friends will be joined in 2016 by squirrel gliders, echidnas, baby crocodiles and large pythons in a bid to show visitors to the centre more of Queensland’s many species of animals.

“The Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre is Brisbane’s best kept secret.

“The centre has a range of family attractions including a showcase of wildlife you may see on your visit to national parks in the south east of the state, and it is just 12 kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD.

“Drop in these holidays and check out Billy’s new mates who now share quarters with wallabies, a spotted-tailed quoll, brightly coloured rainforest parrots in a walk-through bird aviary, ringtail possums, scaly snakes, platypus and native fish.

“It’s all about providing a better visitor experience and quality environmental education.

“One of our key priorities this year has been to further develop Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre as one of three national park Gateway Visitor Centres in Queensland.

“These will provide world-class education experiences, and offer a multitude of ways to experience and enjoy some of the state’s spectacular natural areas while broadening visitors’ understanding of conservation and sustainability."
