AusTriathlon announces new Board Directors and forms Governance Committee

AusTriathlon (formerly Triathlon Australia) has announced the appointment of Directors Paul Stevens and John Lee to the Board along with the formation of a new Sub-Committee, the AusTriathlon Governance Committee.

The appointment of Stevens and Lee adds further strength to the AusTriathlon Board ahead of the next Olympic and Paralympic quadrennial, with a continued focus on enhancing business delivery to grow triathlon in Australia.

Stevens is a strategic leader with experience in regulatory environments, driving transformative changes across business, government, and private sectors.

He made significant contributions as an Independent Board Member at the Safety Governance Foundation and also currently serves as a Non-Executive Director of Skate Australia.

His passion for sports includes leadership roles in not-for-profit organisations. Stevens chaired the VIC Triathlon board and has served on the North Melbourne Football Club Integrity Committee and AusTriathlon Board Nominations Committee.

Lee has been involved in elite sport for most of his career. He served as a strategic advisor for the Australian Olympic Committee, securing better funding from governments, and played a key role at the Australian Sports Commission in the lead-up to the London and Rio Olympic Games.

Lee also served as Chief Executive of Australian Sailing, the Sydney Roosters, and the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Beyond sports, he has headed government departments in tourism, sport, and transport.

AusTriathlon President Michelle Cooper enthused “we are thrilled to welcome Paul and John to the AusTriathlon Board of Directors.

“Both have demonstrated a deep commitment to sports at all levels, from grassroots to elite. We look forward to their contributions and the positive impact they will have on our sport and community.

“In addition, we welcome Mark Warburton as Chair of the AusTriathlon Governance Committee, as part of the Board’s commitment to ensure continued improvement across corporate governance framework, policies and practices.”

The AusTriathlon Governance Committee has been established to ensure effective governance with the goal of promoting transparency, accountability and adherence to governance best practices.

Up to three additional appointees with skills, qualifications or experience in governance, risk management, human resources or legal matters will be appointed to the committee. The inaugural committee will be appointed for two-years following the 2024 AusTriathlon AGM.

Triathlon Australia rebranded as AusTriathlon in September 2023 - announced as a renewed focus on growing and celebrating triathlon in Australia.

AusTriathlon is the governing body responsible for the management of sports such as duathlon, aquathlon and triathlon within Australia. AusTriathlon is recognised as the official national body by the Australian Sports Commission, Australian Olympic Committee, Paralympics Australia, Commonwealth Games Australia and World Triathlon.
