Australia to submit bid to host 2022 Commonwealth Games

The Australian Commonwealth Games Association is reportedly ready to submit a bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

With original host Durban stripped of the event, Australia as well as Canada and the United Kingdom have been reported as being ready to submit formal bids before a deadline set by the Commonwealth Games Federation (GCF) of this Friday (28th April).

The insidethegames website quoted Sam Coffa, President of the Australian Commonwealth Games Association as stating “Australia will express an interest for 2022 with either Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide or Perth."

The bid process was re-opened by the CGF last month following the decision to strip Durban of the event because of lack of progress and their failure to provide the required financial guarantees.

However, the weekend report on the insidethegames webite suggested that the odds will be against Australia, with the 2018 Games being held on the Gold Coast.

The Canadian city of Toronto had expressed an interest in replacing Durban but their hopes were dealt a blow last month when the City Council voted against plans to accelerate discussions on the proposal.

Edmonton, originally Durban's only rival for the 2022 Games before they withdrew due to the falling oil prices, are also investigating whether to bid.

It is not certain which Australian city would host the event but Melbourne and Perth each  indicated a willingness to host the four-yearly event after Durban’s withdrawl. Since then 11 regional Victorian towns and cities, including Shepparton, Geelong, Mildura and Ballarat, have come together to launch a campaign to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030.

Bids need to be accompanied by some form of Government support, although the CGF are expected to be flexible about this in the early part of the process.

A panel of international experts and CGF staff are expected to investigate the bids before making a recommendation to the Executive Board by mid-summer.
