Auckland Council report shows ongoing need for Mt Albert Aquatic Centre

Auckland Council has released the findings of an investigation of community services provision in the central west, which includes Mt Albert and Whau.

The findings concluded there is a need for a new aquatic and recreation centre in Whau and a need to continue aquatic provision in Mt Albert.

Auckland Council Manager Community Policy Liz Civil says that the report is clear in advising that while Mt Albert residents are likely to benefit from a Whau pool, it will not eliminate the need for an aquatic centre in Mt Albert.

Civil explains “the investigation identified long-term aquatic provision was required in Mt Albert to service current and future populations.

"$3.2 million was invested in Mt Albert pool in 2015 to deal with critical condition issues and to ensure services could continue for at least 10 years while a decision was made on its long-term future.

"Ongoing maintenance and renewals are planned and budgeted for the facility to support continued services beyond the next decade."

Civil advised that Mt Albert Aquatic is currently the New Zealand Recreation Association Pool of the Year, adding "Council staff are currently working with the Albert-Eden Local Board, Mt Albert Grammar School Board of Trustees and Mt Albert Grammar School Community Swimming Pool Trust to determine the best approach to securing the long-term future of aquatic provision in Mt Albert.

"This could involve an aquatic facility at a new location, or investment to maintain provision at the current site."
