Moore Park Golf's environmental management system certified with ISO 14001 credentials

Moore Park Golf, one of Australia's busiest public golf courses, has developed an Environmental Management System which has now been certified with ISO 14001 credentials making Moore Park Golf one of the most environmentally-friendly public golf courses in Australia.

Announcing the achievement, Centennial Parklands Director and Chief Executive Kim Ellis explained "Moore Park Golf is a jewel in the crown of public golf courses in Sydney.

"Not only is it the closest public golf course to the Sydney CBD, but it is nestled within the boundaries of Centennial Parklands one of the world's best urban parks.

"This combination of proximity and beautiful surrounds has long made it a draw card for golfers in Sydney. In fact, this year is the 100th anniversary of public golf at Moore Park.

"Over 55,000 rounds of golf are played here every year, and over one million golf balls hit off our driving range every month. Still, with all this activity, it is great to still have a high quality course to enjoy.

"Having a dual-role of parklands managers and golf course managers gives us the relatively unique opportunity of extending a number of our environmental programs to the management of the course ... (which) we believe is industry-leading."

Mal Durkin, Course Superintendent at Moore Park Golf for the last 20 years, has proudly overseen this operational change from traditional greenkeeping for presentation, to greenkeeping with an environmental sustainability focus.

Durkin adds "the golf course and Parklands provide a really important part of Sydney's greenspace.

"We see so much activity and diversity (flora and fauna) across the golf course we want to make sure that it is protected and flourishes as it is such an important part of the golfing experience here are Moore Park.

"The EMS has been a great tool to help practically manage our responsibilities and guide our environmental improvements across the course. Certification has been a goal for us and it is great to get the recognition for my team and their efforts.

"The best outcome, from my and the patrons perspective, is that the presentation of this course has not deteriorated from this new focus and is still an immaculate condition for such a well-loved venue."
