Upgraded Mt Albert Aquatic Centre to reopen
The Mt Albert Aquatic Centre in Auckland is set to reopen on 12th September following a $3.2 million makeover.
Auckland Council provided a grant to the Mount Albert Grammar School Swimming Pool Trust to carry out the work, which included: a new roof; repainting of the entire centre; repairs to the sauna, spa pool and steam room; refreshed hydroslide (waterslide) and changing rooms; and replacing components of the pool plant and air conditioning systems that had come to the end of their natural life.
Welcoming the improvements, Mr Albert Grammar School Community Swimming Pool Trust Chairperson Glenda Fryer stated “it’s looking great and users will notice a big difference.
“But more than that, the upgrade ensures the facility is safe and operational for another five to 10 years.”
Mount Albert Grammar School (MAGS) Headmaster Dale Burden is looking forward to having pool operational after the much needed upgrade.
He added “we value the relationship with the council as our arrangement enables the new MAGS Aquatic Academy, MAGS Swimming Club and our physical education classes to have access to a top facility in the school grounds."
Located in the Albert-Eden Local Board area, Board Chair Peter Haynes says there is an increasing demand for leisure and fitness facilities in Auckland so it is important community facilities keep up with the need.
Hayne explained “we appreciate the public’s patience during the refurbishment so we encourage people to come by on the opening day for a free swim.”
The Mt Albert Aquatic Centre is owned by the Mt Albert Grammar School Community Swimming Pool Trust having been built through a partnership between Mt Albert Grammar School and Auckland Council.
It is managed by Belgravia Leisure under the supervision of Auckland Council.
The facility attracts an average of 340,000 visits per annum and is used for a variety of activities including learn-to-swim, squad swimming, water-polo, underwater hockey, lap swimming and recreational swimming.
