ALFA Welcomes Crawford Report's 'Pool of Opportunities'

The Australian Leisure Facilities Association (ALFA) has welcomed the recommendations contained within this week's Crawford Report into future sports funding and governance.

In a statement detailing the report's key recommendations, and their implications for ALFA Members and Australia's aquatic, recreation and sport facilities, the national Association explains "the recommendations work on the premise that increased participation at a grass roots level will increase the potential at an elite level, while also addressing the preventative health agenda."

The ALFA statement adds "much has already been written about the potential 'losers' in this report, that being 'elite sport', but the quiet potential champions of these recommendations are community facilities.

"The report identifies the improved health and wellbeing of our population as a priority, along with providing all Australians with the opportunity to participate in their sport(s) of choice, whilst still aiming for continued international success for Australia in the sporting arena. Facility provision is at the forefront of the recommendations to assist in achieving these outcomes, acknowledging that Governments at all levels will have to increase their investment in community facilities if grass roots sport is to flourish."

ALFA's rapid interpretation of the implications of the Crawford Report and its circulation of this information to professionals throughout the aquatic, recreation and sport facilities industry is an indication of the vital role the recently formed Association is playing in representing industry professionals across Australia.
