Wrestling federation warned by International Olympic Committee

Wrestling's bid to be reinstated as an Olympic sport has been dealt a blow after FILA, the sport's international federation, was officially warned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for breaching rules.

Wrestling, through FILA (the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles) is vying with squash and baseball/softball to be included in the 2020 Games in an IOC vote this weekend having been dropped from the Olympic program in February.

An IOC letter to the international federations of each sport stated "an official warning was sent on Friday 30th August.

"The matter is now considered closed."

The letter added "it was recently brought to our attention that the wrestling federation and an organisation supporting them engaged in activities that were not in line with the 'Rules of Conduct for the international federations seeking inclusion in the Olympic programme'."

Wrestling is the front-runner to win the contest, which will be decided during the IOC's 125th session in Buenos Aires this weekend.

IOC members are also deciding which of Istanbul, Tokyo and Madrid will be the host city for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.
