World T20 aims for record crowd for Women’s 2020 Final
With venues confirmed for the WorldT20 tournament, the International Cricket Council is aiming for the final of the 2020 women’s WorldT20 tournament at the MCG to set a world record attendance for a female sporting event.
When the tournament comes to Australia for the first time in 2020, the MCG’s hosting of the men’s and women’s final of the ICC World T20 will be the culmination of the hosting of two stand-alone events.
The women’s competition will be held in February and March, before the men play in October and November.
A sellout crowd for the Women’s final on International Women’s Day, 21st February 2020, would make history – breaking the world record attendance for any women’s sport fixture.
With the MCG’s capacity of 100,024, a full crowd would set a record for a women’s sporting event. The current record is for 90,185 – set for the final of FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1999 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, USA.
In total, eight cities have been selected to host matches during Australia’s WorldT20: Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Geelong, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. The women’s competition will feature 10 teams, with the men’s tournament to comprise 16 teams.
13 venues will host matches, including the recently-opened Optus Stadium in Perth.
The MCG will host the men’s and women’s finals, while the Sydney Cricket Ground will stage both women’s semi-finals and one men’s semi-final. The second men’s semi-final will be held at the Adelaide Oval.
Local Organising Committee Chief Executive, Nick Hockley advised “we’ve designed ICC World T20, comprising standalone women’s and men’s events, to be more inclusive, more accessible and more connected than ever before.
“(We) look forward to delivering a spectacular celebration in 2020, including welcoming thousands of international visitors to attend matches and be part of it.”
