Australia and New Zealand confirmed as hosts for 2020 World Twenty20

On the eve of jointly hosting the Cricket World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that Australia and New Zealand will host the World Twenty20 in the year 2020.

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson, in Australia for the Cricket World Cup, made the surprise announcement that the T20 event will be based in Australia and New Zealand for the first time in a press conference yesterday (10th February).

Richardson stated "we'd like to come back to Australia and New Zealand more often (but) the fact is the time zone for this part of the world, relative to the rest of the cricket playing world, is not ideal."

Cricket Australia Chief Executive James Sutherland welcomed the hosting, stating “it’s an honour to be hosting a global event on behalf of the ICC.

“We haven’t cast our minds that far ahead yet, 2020 seems like a long way away.

"We’ll focus our attention on that after this tournament.”

It has been 23 years since the two nations hosted a major cricket event, the 1992 World Cup.

The last World Twenty20 was staged in Bangladesh in 2014.
