Western Sydney’s Wentworthville swimming pool reopens after $12.2 million upgrade

Cumberland City Council has this week reopened its Wentworthville Memorial Swim Centre after a $12.2 million upgrade.

With work completed in time for the outdoor facility’s pre-Easter reopening, the Centre, which first opened in 1965, now offers a new warm program pool, a leisure pool with beach entry and new change rooms.

A lift has also been installed to allow people with disability to use the 50-metre pool while the Centre also includes a new café that can be accessed from the main road and will be open to the general public.

Reopening the facility, Cumberland City Council Mayor, Steve Christou stated “this Swim Centre was traditionally one of Western Sydney’s most popular swimming spots prior to the revamp, and based on the Centre’s new look and improved amenities, I expect it will be even more popular with residents and families in our local community.”

Mayor Christou said Council is planning to modernise and redevelop other public pools in due course, adding “our residents deserve facilities that are modern.

“Now that the Wentworthville Memorial Swim Centre is complete, Council staff will be making budget assessments and looking at other opportunities to modernise pools across the LGA and ensure our residents have access to the best facilities and services possible.”

Explaining the value of the new facility, he noted “this is a model we want to go down for pools.

“We don’t want to be stuck in that ’60s model where there’s swimming pools and nothing happening. You’ve got the kids’ play area, you’ve got the baby pool - this is more appealing to young families, especially in the day when they’re competing against iPhones, iPads and social media.”

Prior to the reorganisation of local government in Sydney, in 2013, the former Holroyd Council voted to close its Wentworthville and Guildford pools to develop a regional-level aquatic centre at Merrylands.

Facing rising maintenance costs for its older pools, its plan proved unpopular with residents and was shelved when the new Cumberland City Council was created in 2016.

Belgravia Leisure, who also currently manage the Council’s Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre, has been engaged to oversee the day-to-day management of the Centre.

It will now be open for four weeks during the Easter holidays before closing for winter.
