Wellington earthquake threatens second Bledisloe Cup test at Westpac Stadium

The second Bledisloe Cup match between New Zealand and Australia on Saturday could be moved to another venue due to safety concerns relating to Friday's earthquake in Wellington.

The stadium in the New Zealand capital was closed shortly after the 6.6 earthquake hit on Friday afternoon and remained closed over the weekend, with a full damage and safety report to be carried out early this week.

On Saturday, Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown said initial checks had been completed and there were no reported problems, stating "we believe it's fine."

Amid aftershocks and with GNS Science predicting the chance of an aftershock measuring 6 in magnitude in the next week, the sold-out second Bledisloe Cup Test is in some doubt.

SANZAR Chief Executive Greg Peters told News Corp Australia that his organisation would monitor the situation and work with the New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) should there be a need to move the match.

Peters stated "at this stage it's probably nothing to worry about until they have conducted an inspection", adding that the NZRU and the venue managers "should do everything to ensure the safety of the spectators."

Auckland's Eden Park would be the most likely venue if the game had to be moved, considering its ground capacity.

Westpac Stadium was built in 1999 by Fletcher Construction and was earthquake strengthened to the standards of the time.
