Simon Weatherill to address ALFA networking event at the Australian Fitness & Health Expo
Facility management expert Simon Weatherill will be the keynote speaker at the Australian Leisure Facilities Association (ALFA) networking lunch being held during the 2012 Australian Fitness & Health Expo.
Best known as Chief Executive of the Victorian State Sport Centres Trust (SSCT), which includes the Melbourne Sport and Aquatic Centre (MSAC), which he has managed since its opening, Weatherill will be speaking on the topic of 'Aligning Strategy with Culture'.
Finding the right strategy, vision and purpose are essential for long term success of any organisation, but they are also integral in providing organisational members with a sense that work matters far more than instrumental ends. Simon believes in the premise that motivation and sustainable commitment come from an individual's belief that their efforts are contributing to something worthwhile.
As he explains "in the short term, each of us may be motivated by the prospect of a promotion, raise or meeting a deadline but in the longer term commitment requires that people genuinely believe their efforts contribute to some higher good and make a difference. A shared vision and purpose helps infuse the organisation with meaning and purpose beyond institutional ends."
A former Physical Education specialist from Keele University (UK), Simon has managed facilities in both the United Kingdom and Australia. He also lectured for three years at Deakin University (Burwood Campus - Melbourne) in the Sports Management Graduate and Undergraduate courses.
In addition to his extensive management experience, Simon has had the opportunity to develop many major 'greenfield site' sporting facilities in Melbourne. These include the Ashburton Pool and Recreation Centre project, the MSAC project (valued at $65 million); the Victorian State Netball Hockey Centre project (valued at $27 million); the MSAC redevelopment (valued at $70 million); the establishment of the MSAC Institute of Training; and the recently opened $65 million Lakeside Stadium project.
