WaterMarc installs RFID Lockers from Centaman Entrance Control

180 lockers with SI Locks from Centaman Entrance Control have been installed at Banyule City Council's recently opened WaterMarc multi activity regional centre.

The largest aquatic and recreation facility in the northern region of Victoria and home to the premier gym and indoor swimming pool in the area with a wide range of fitness classes and training programs, the $42 million WaterMarc project is a leader in the provision of community recreation and wellness services with facilities that will continue to deliver excellent results and service for all that visit.

One of the goals from the start was to provide a seamless experience for it members upon visiting. A key ingredient for WaterMarc in being able to deliver this experience was for the member's lockers to integrate with the access control & membership system so only members can use the lockers provided.

To this end WaterMarc had 180 custom lockers built and fitted them with SI Locks provided by Centaman Entrance Control. The SI Locks are self-contained, smart locks, that are battery powered which eliminates the need for any wiring. . They feature a built in RFID reader and motor driven lock. The SI

Locks are based on read/write technology which checks if a RFID credential (membership) is valid at that particular site and if the user already has a locker in use. Provided it meets these requirements the user can then lock the locker, if not the lock won't function.

The SI Locks at WaterMarc are configured so the lockers are normally unlocked and a member may lock one for the duration of their visit using the same RFID credential, in this case their member card, that is used to gain access to the turnstiles and other access control points in the facility.

Banyule City Council Leisure Facilities Co-Coordinator Tom Zapulla explains "the SI locks provide an effective, flexible and highly cost effective alternative to the traditional padlock or key based locker systems.

"Members can use the same RFID wristband or card that they use to access the facility to lock any free locker. The software that comes with the system enables us to programme which cards work at which locations as well as adding validity times to cards to match membership periods or other functions such as programming the lockers to pop open out of hours. This enables us to match most of the functionality of a networked solution at a fraction of the cost."

WaterMarc is is featured in the November/December 2012 issue of Australasian Leisure Management.
