Warwick Hockey Centre gets official opening

The $6.3 million Warwick Hockey Centre has been officially opened in Perth’s northern suburbs.

The refurbished facility features an international standard Greenfields TX synthetic pitch, two grass pitches, clubroom facilities, floodlighting and a spectator viewing area.

It also houses a new public artwork titled Yarn Circle, which is a celebration of sport and the natural environment and was created by artist Paula Hart in consultation with tenant Whitford Hockey Club.

The project was funded by a $4.5 million contribution from the City of Joondalup and $1.2 million from the Western Australian Government through its Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund, with Whitford Hockey Club contributed $600,000.

Joondalup council will be responsible for the maintenance of the two grassed pitches, floodlighting and car park while the hockey club will manage the synthetic pitch and clubrooms.

Commenting on the development, Joondalup Mayor Troy Pickard told the Joondalup Times “it is fantastic to bring this project to fruition and turn what was once a dream into a reality for one of our biggest sporting clubs.

“The need for additional synthetic hockey pitch facilities in the north metropolitan area has been well documented and Warwick Hockey Centre will not only service the vast numbers of people playing hockey in the northern corridor but will also attract users from outside the region.

“Warwick Hockey Centre, which sits alongside the recently redeveloped Warwick Stadium, has turned this section of our south ward into one of Perth’s most dynamic sporting precincts.”

The Greenfields TX hockey surface from Netherlands-based TenCate was installed by Tiger Turf.

Explaining the project on their website, Tiger Turf state “the (Whitford Hockey Club) were looking for a watered hockey surface that offered a high performance game and would function in tandem with the insitu rubber shock pad we were to install beneath the hockey playing surface.

“The Club were looking for a hockey surface that would be easily lifted when it came to replacing it and be laid over the existing shock pad.

“As the Greenfields TX surface is a loose-laid hockey surface it can be easily lifted to allow resurfacing.

“The Club’s players had played on a Greenfields TX surface at the Perth Hockey Centre and found it offered an excellent playing experience.”

Last weekend’s official opening of the Warwick Hockey Centre saw Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray, local politicians, Joondalup councillors and executives on hand as  a plaque was unveiled to commemorate the occasion.
