Victorian Government launches Motorcycle Tourism Strategy
Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher and Minister for Roads Terry Mulder have launched a Motorcycle Tourism Strategy for the period from 2013 to 2016.
Minister Asher said the Strategy is the first of its kind for Victoria and aims to grow a largely untapped niche market, while underpinning the overall priority of rider safety.
Minister Asher stated "Victoria has some of the most spectacular coastal and inland touring road routes and also hosts the nation's two biggest motorcycle events at Phillip Island.
"The Strategy will primarily target the intrastate market, essentially locals taking a weekend off to explore regional Victoria, while also focusing on interstate visitors attracted by major events such as the MotoGP and World Superbikes."?
The Victorian Motorcycle Tourism Strategy 2013-16 will seek to grow the motorcycle touring niche across the State by:
• Increasing marketing activities that specifically target motorcycle riders;
• Encouraging Regional Tourism Boards to engage with motorcycle groups and events;
• Providing more safety information for riders, particularly relating to high-volume motorcycle touring routes; and
• Better leveraging major events such as the MotoGP and World Superbikes, as well as smaller local events and group rides.
Victorian Road Minister Terry Mulder said the Coalition Government has delivered on its commitment to recognise and respect motorcyclists as legitimate road users.
Minister Mulder added "this strategy, along with the trial of motorcyles on the Hoddle Street bus lane, providing motorcycle groups with greater representation on the Motorcycle Advisory Group and the parliamentary inquiry into motorcycle safetly, all demonstrate our commitment in action."
Chair of the Parliamentary Road Safety Committee Murray Thompson also welcomed the release of the Victorian Motorcycle Tourism Strategy, concluding "Australian Bureau of Statistics research shows over the five years to January 2011, motorcycle registrations grew at an annual rate that was 8% faster than any other vehicle type.
"Another study by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Motorcycle Tracker Research Project 2010 found that motorcyclists use their bikes for recreational on-road riding more than any other purpose?"
