VTIC welcomes review of Victorian visitor economy

The Victorian Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) has welcomed the Victorian Government’s recent announcement regarding the proposed Victorian Visitor Economy Review, saying it will benefit the events industry.

Explaining the value of events to Victoria, VTIC Chief Executive Dianne Smith stated “Victoria’s celebrated business, sporting and cultural events are an important part of our state’s $19 billion tourism sector and it is positive that the spotlight is on opportunities to further capitalise on this growth industry.

“Victorian businesses throughout our state are keen to collaborate further on events with government and we are confident that this review will highlight innovative opportunities for this.”

Smith’s comments follow the announcement earlier this month that the Victorian Government will take action to ensure the State maintains its status as the major events capital of Australia by backing a Victorian Visitor Economy Review.

The Review will study events in Australian and international cities, along with a review of Victoria’s relevant government bodies.

Once complete, the Victorian Government would use the review to map out a plan for the next decade to help the state grow.

Victoria currently attracts 2.3 million international visitors each year with many coming to attend the many major events held in Melbourne and throughout regional Victoria.

Backing Victoria’s events calendar, Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren adds “no one does events quite like Victoria, however we recognise our interstate counterparts are hot on our heels.

“The industry is competitive, and we need to ensure our strategy keeps us ahead of the pack.

“Organisers from all around the world bring their events to Victoria for a reason, but we should always be working on our reputation as the ideal place to stage a major event.”
