Upcoming Australian GT race at Phillip Island cancelled

The second round of the Australian GT Endurance Championship due to take place at Phillip Island from 20th to 22nd March has been cancelled.

The event was one of two races to be held at the MotoGP venue in March and August.

August’s round is now set to be extended from four hours to six to compensate for the second round not being run.

Commenting on the cancellation, Australian GT category rights holder, Jim Manolios told Auto Action “we saw that last weekend in Adelaide with numbers in most categories down on past years, and a surprising number of cars running without any level of sponsor support, so money is tight, and for us - we campaign one of the highest cost championships in the country, so we’re usually the first to feel it - especially when it comes to the longer events.

“We will talk more to Motorsport Australia and look at a variety of options available for the August Phillip Island round to determine an outcome for the Australian Endurance Championship, including as stated above the introduction of one single six-hour race to replace the two proposed four-hour events.”

The second Australian GT Endurance Championship event is dues to be held on Phillip Island from 14th to 16th August.
