Understanding the fundamentals of communications and media to boost your business

The inaugural Leisure Industry Communication and Marketing Summit and Awards in Sydney next week will be focussing on key communication issues relating to crises and emergencies, building reputation and how good communication and marketing can enhance income generation.

With significant numbers of key industry personnel attending and registrations still open, event organiser Nigel Benton, Publisher of Australasian Leisure Management magazine, explains that the event will also be covering the fundamentals of communication and media relations.

Significantly, Benton advises that a lot of inquiries have come from professionals who want to learn about many of the basics of communication and media relations.

He explains “we created the Summit and Awards to recognise and enhance industry communications and marketing so it has been interesting to see how many professionals and organisations want to learn more and improve how they approach this key management function.

“But what several conversations have revealed, surprisingly, is that people who are accomplished in sales or who I’ve seen captivate an industry audience with a passion for what they do, struggle to translate those achievements into communicating with media.

With experience that this is widespread across the leisure industry, Benton fears that opportunities for the industry to enhance its reputation and boost business.

He advises “that is what next week’s Summit is about.”

He also points to an excellent recent example of how media coverage can generate massive interest in a business, citing a news report in a Sydney’s North Shore Times on Vision Personal Training Wahroonga.

Benton explains “this simple news report is of huge benefit to this business and is a testament to the effectiveness of communication and media relations at its best.

“As with all good communication and media relations activities, it did not incur any direct costs to the business and its value to the brand, business and reputation of Vision Personal Training Wahroonga is incalculable.”

Benton also cites that Australasian Leisure Management provides a simple guide to any organisation on producing a press release on its Contributors page at www.ausleisure.com.au/contribute/

Being held at ANZ Stadium, Sydney on Thursday 24th August 2017, the full-day Leisure Industry Communication and Marketing Summit and Awards is the first time that the leisure industry and its key sectors - aquatics, attractions, entertainment, events, fitness, parks, recreation, sport, tourism and venues - will have had the opportunity to focus on key (non-sales) elements of marketing.
