Two Commonwealth Games officials arrested

Indian police have arrested and formally charged two high-ranking officials from the organising committee of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games for corruption.

Joint Director General TS Darbari and Deputy Director General Sanjay Mahindroo were arrested for offences relating to forgery, cheating and criminal conspiracy.

The charges are in connection with alleged money laundering fraud across India and England, involving the London arrival of the Queens Baton relay. The two men are said to have handed out contracts at "exorbitant rates" to two London-based private firms, AM Films and AM Car, for providing transport services and video screens for the event held in London last year.

A statement by the Central Bureau of Investigation said "the accused persons caused huge loss to the government of India and corresponding wrongful gain to the accused firms.

"Incriminating documents recovered during searches are being scrutinised."

Both Darbari and Mahendroo were sacked by the organising committee's Chairman Suresh Kalmadi after the scandal surfaced in early August. Both deny any wrongdoing.
