TV standard lighting to be installed at Townsville's Tony Ireland Stadium
Federal Government funding to install TV standard lighting at Townsville's Tony Ireland Stadium will see the venue target night time international cricket and AFL matches for the city.
Announcing the receipt of a $5.3 million matching grant under Regional Development Australia Fund for the $10.6 million project, Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill explained that "(this) is great news for the council and the many thousands of sports people and fans across the city.
"TV standard lighting opens the door to attracting televised cricket and AFL matches to the city and importantly the council's funding submission was supported by Townsville's cricket and AFL authorities as well as Cricket Australia, Cricket Queensland and AFL Queensland.
"The best chance we have of securing high standard sporting fixtures for TV is to play them at night to avoid the heat.
"We have national rugby league, basketball and netball, and the lighting upgrade opens up a whole range of exciting new opportunities for sporting participation for the city at all levels."
Tony Ireland Stadium has already hosted interstate and international cricket, and national AFL junior and senior championships and will now further develop as a venue for national sport.
The project is expected to begin within 12 months and council's matching funding will be delivered over two financial years.
