Thuringowa Stadium Brings Big Crowds
Thuringowa's Riverway Stadium has opened.
The new stadium, now known as the Tony Ireland Stadium comprises an AFL and cricket oval, a 1,000-seat grandstand and supporting facilities (while a further 9,000 spectators can be accommodated on grassed mounds surrounding the oval), a practice oval and cricket practice nets.
Built to host AFL and cricket matches at local, regional, state and national levels; the new $16.5-million venue has already hosted a sold-out Queensland Bulls v Victoria Bushrangers Twenty20 game.
The Stadium marks the completion of the second stage of Thuringowa City Council's Riverway Project (stage one was featured in the July/August 2006 issue of Australasian Leisure Management), and is seen as one of the major pieces of sporting infrastructure in North Queensland.
