TTC design and construct new skate and BMX parks for South Australia

The Trail Collective (TTC), a company that creates global scale dirt trails, BMX play spaces, bike parks and pump tracks tailored for a variety of bike disciplines, is in the process of designing and constructing new parks for Mount Compass and Roxby Downs.

TTC were engaged by Alexandrina Council Outerspace Landscape Architects to include a design for a Pump Track and Bike Park component to the masterplan of Mount Compass Recreation Park. Mount Compass, located in Southern Adelaide in the Mount Lofty Ranges heading towards the Fleurieu Peninsula is a small community supported by quality, local produce and farming.

The Pump Track and Bike Park design caters for beginners and intermediate riders, with the addition of multiple lines to promote enthusiasm and enjoyment while providing the ability for skill development.

TTC included a unique ‘Snake Run’ feature connecting an exciting riding path from the skate park down to the BMX area. Offering something for the entire community, the masterplan has a range of additional amenities, encompassing a skate park, nature play area, recreational spaces, BBQ and picnic zones, shaded structures and spectator viewing areas.

Construction of the space is expected to commence in mid-late 2019.

Roxby Downs, a small township located in Northern Central South Australia, is a remote and rural community which comprises of mining workers and their families. The climate is hot and dry all year round with minimal shade and water is a valuable resource.

The community and client were interested in a BMX facility to suit the climate. With funding and support sourced through grants, in-kind contractors and council members direction and purpose, TTC were engaged to conduct community engagement, design, planning and construction services.

As part of this project, the local youth and school students were engaged to present their desires, inclusions and designs for the Pump Track and surrounding area.

After a positive and thorough engagement process with council, TTC and stakeholders, information was used to design a youth precinct and asphalt pump track to cater for beginner and intermediate riders.

TTC integrated a jump section, rollable doubles, berms and a wall ride feature for increased user enjoyment and skill development.Recreation nodes, BBQ’s and amenities were integrated into the design of the facility to encourage family activities and to attract a broader demographic to the space.

Construction of the space is expected to commence in late 2019 to early 2020.

TTC are a dedicated team working with local government and councils as well as private clients to create spaces with an educated and professional approach, ultimately creating the best standard of space, no matter the scale or direction.

TTC consider that outdoor recreational activity is becoming an ever increasing issue, particularly among society’s young people. Participation rates in traditional team sports are declining and State and Local Governments are looking for new ways to deliver a means to increase community activity.

Engaging participants has become an important focal point for decision makers, imperative that new projects are undertaken with a long-term vision for the future of youth recreation.
