Townsville community encouraged to plant trees for National Tree Day

Townsville City Council is calling its community of tree lovers and environmental carers to help them plant trees for National Tree Day.

Held on Sunday 30th July, National Tree Day is Australia's largest community tree planting and nature care event.

This year Council has encouraged people to get their hands dirty and join them to plant some native trees at Jezzine Barracks Park.

Mayor Jenny Hill said it was an opportunity for locals to help and contribute to the region's habitat.

Mayor Hill shared "Council holds this event every year and it has been a successful way of getting community members involved in environmental activities and increasing their education surrounding environmental impacts and changes.

"On the day we will have educational information available, as well as complimentary refreshments and a free native plant for people to take home after.

"Council is also throwing its support behind tomorrow's (Friday 28th July) School Tree Day.

"More than 1000 native plants ready for planting were handed out to local schools at a special ceremony at Riverway Stadium

"These events are also important in building community connections and allowing locals to revisit the site each year and see the progress of the trees.

"They create a lasting legacy for our city and contribute to the local wildlife and habitats.

"Anyone interested in planting a tree on Sunday can just turn up on the day to help make our city a greener place to live."

The community planting event is on from 8:30am to 10am on Sunday, 30th July at Jezzine Barracks Park.
