Hills Shire Council looks to plant 4,500 trees this National Tree Day
The Hills Shire Council is looking to plant almost 4,500 native trees and shrubs this National Tree Day and is inviting the local community to join in on the event and help Council reach its goal at Wheelie Park, in the Gables, on Sunday 30th July.
Established in 1996 by Planet Ark, National Tree Day has grown into Australia's largest community tree-planting and nature care event. The program is a call to action for all Australians to get their hands dirty and give back to their community.
Schools Tree Day and National Tree Day are celebrated on the last Friday and last Sunday in July.
Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Peter Gangemi, said Council is delighted to support the Planet Ark initiative and advises "National Tree Day goes beyond simply assisting Council in revitalising the local environment. It involves gaining a greater appreciation for native vegetation and wildlife in our area and fostering stronger community bonds.
"The event also promotes the significance of our natural areas and the need to conserve these special green spaces for future generations.
"I am particularly excited that 4,500 trees will be planted in the Gables, as Council and the community are always seeking to increase vegetation in our new release areas."
Once all the hard work is completed, attendees will be treated to a complimentary barbecue lunch hosted by the Castle Hill Lions Club.
Castle Hill Lions Club President Ritesh Duggal said the event, which they've been supporting for more than 20 years, is a chance for people to come along, grab a sausage sandwich and pitch in to conserve the local environment.
"It's exciting to see past National Tree Day planting areas grow and develop over time, serve as a home to native birds and animals and become a recreational spot for the community," Duggal shared.
"Trees are a gift to both our planet and ourselves. They support life on Earth and provide us with the air we breathe.
"We are very excited to support Council's National Tree Day event, and we look forward to seeing you all there on the day."
