Tourism infrastructure boost for Lake Tyrrell

One of Victoria’s most remarkable natural attractions, the salt lake environment of Lake Tyrrell, is to receive $2.6 million worth of new visitor information and tourism infrastructure.

With China having grown to be Victoria’s largest market for inbound tourists - expected to contribute up to 60% of tourism spending by 2025 - Victoria’s largest salt lake has proved to be especially popular with visitors from China over recent years.

The project, a priority for the Mallee Regional Partnership, will deliver a range of new facilities including a boardwalk, interpretive signage, walking tracks, a viewing area, accessible toilets, waste management infrastructure, and parking with turnaround space for buses.

When complete, the $2.58 million project is expected to boost the lake’s current visitation numbers from 42,000 a year to more than 192,000 by 2025, contributing more than AUD 6.9 million to the local economy.

The tourism investment has delighted Promhelis, a newly established helicopter scenic flight business operating from Sea Lake.

Promhelis Director Jarrod Danahay explained “we pride ourselves in showcasing the beauty of Lake Tyrrell and its surrounds.

“This investment will be a positive benefit to both tourism and economic growth for the township of Sea Lake and the Mallee region.”

As visitation to the area increases along with demand for accommodation, new businesses are expected to be established in surrounding towns like Sea Lake to service the growing market.

Commenting on the investment, Victorian Minister for Regional Development Jaala Pulford stated “making Lake Tyrrell more accessible to more visitors from around the world will showcase our largest and most spectacular Salt Lake, and bring more people to Victoria’s north west.”
