Victoria Tourism Industry Council welcomes reduced penalty rates

The Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) has welcomed the Fair Work Commission’s decision to reduce penalty rates on Sundays and Public Holidays, saying it will improve Victoria’s tourism and hospitality experience and create more jobs.

According to VTIC, the decision to reduce penalty rates for full-time and part-time workers in the retail and hospitality industries is an opportunity for the visitor economy because it will allow businesses to stay open for longer, providing better services.

VTIC Chief Executive Brad Ostermeyer stated “many small businesses struggle with the increased wage burden of opening on Sundays, leading many to keep their doors closed. This can have a negative impact on the visitor experience.

“(This) decision will provide some certainty for businesses that have to manage rosters and have complicated operations servicing the 24/7 visitor economy.”

Last year the VTIC predicted that rising labour costs would put pressure on the profitability of many tourism businesses.
