Torrens University Australia launches new degrees in future growth industries

Torrens University Australia has welcomed students to its new range of ‘Degrees that Work’ in the fields of Health, Hospitality, Design, Education and Business with a strong emphasis on increasing graduate employability and meeting the needs of future growth industries.

Academics from Torrens University Australia have worked in consultation with industry professionals to develop new programs of study in industries with strong anticipated jobs growth, in addition to providing students with dynamic industry placements, such as with Basketball Queensland, Landor, B&T and Accor Hotels among others.

Vice-Chancellor of Torrens University Australia, Professor Justin Beilby explained “our programs have been created following extensive consultation with industry to ensure we are equipping our students with the specific skills and knowledge required by employers in their chosen sector to boost the employability, and value, of our students after graduation.

“The concept behind Degrees that Work is that they are not just qualifications, but rigorous programs, whether taught face-to-face, online or a hybrid of both, which tackle real-life case studies, involve work placements and are aimed at addressing genuine skills gaps in particular industry sectors.”

The new programs will include online study options for students combining study with work and managing a busy lifestyle, as well as those based overseas and in regional or rural Australia.

Recreation, Sport and Wellness
The University recently launched a Diploma of Sport Development, providing a solid foundation in the necessary skills to work in the recreation, sport and wellness sector, such as designing and evaluating health promotion strategies and developing solutions to a wide array of challenges in the areas of human nutrition, activity and fitness.

Graduates of this program will progress to become sports development managers, competition managers, program developers, talent development managers and sports program co-coordinators among others.

Torrens University Australia cite research growth of 9.3% in the gyms and fitness centres industry in the period 2012 to 2017 (Gyms and Fitness Centres in Australia, IBISWorld) and growth of 6% in sports administrative services in the period 2010 to 2015, to suggest that there are likely to be many job opportunities for graduates seeking engaging careers in the recreation, sport and wellness sectors.

Hospitality
William Blue College of Hospitality Management is offering a vast array of programs, from introductory diplomas to bachelor degrees in specialist fields aimed to train students seeking employment in the constantly evolving and growing hospitality, event and tourism sectors.

Employment data corroborates strong growth in the hospitality industries with employment in restaurants increasing by more than 15,000 in the five years to 2021/22. Meanwhile, the catering services industry is likely to enjoy annual revenue growth of 4.9% in the years 2011/12 to 2016/17.

Brand new programs for 2017 include:

• Bachelor of Culinary Management & Associate Degree of Culinary Management
• Bachelor of Business (Hospitality Management); Associate Degree of Business (Hospitality Management) & Diploma of Business (Hospitality Management)
• Bachelor of Business (Event Management); Associate Degree of Business (Event Management) & Diploma of Business (Event Management)
• Bachelor of Business (Tourism Management)

Business and Communications
APM College of Business and Communication at Torrens University Australia is offering two new programs for 2017, the Diploma of Event Management (HE) and the Bachelor of Business (Communication and Public Relations).

Professor Beilby added “with full-time, part-time and accelerated study options, the Diploma of Event Management teaches students to generate and execute large-scale creative event concepts in a corporate environment, leading to potential careers in conference coordination, event and exhibition planning, event sales and venue coordination, among others.”

Students of the Bachelor of Business (Communication and Public Relations) program will gain extensive skills in public relations strategy, writing, international media strategy, brand building and audience research, as well as crisis management, ethics, consumer behaviour and corporate responsibility.

Graduates will be well-placed to enter an agency or in-house PR environment upon graduation whether in Australia or overseas.
