Tokyo attractions extend closure again due to COVID-19

Operators of Tokyo attractions - Tokyo Disney Resort and Universal Studios Japan - will again extend their closure and reopen later than mid-May to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in line with the government's request.

Kyodo News reports that Oriental Land Co., which operates Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, advised that on 27th March, 12 days after they were originally hoping to reopen, that they would reopen 20th April or later.

Meanwhile, Universal Studios Japan LLC, the operator of the amusement park in Osaka, was previously planning to reopen next Sunday.

Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo DisneySea and Universal Studios Japan have all been closed since 29th February.

The closure extension came after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared a state of emergency until 6th May, for Chiba and Osaka prefectures, where the parks are located, as well as five other prefectures.

Kyodo News also reports that the declaration enables local authorities to instruct people to stay at home and companies to close large facilities.

Oriental Land will also extend the closure of its four group hotels, which are inside or near the parks, such as the Disney Ambassador Hotel.
