Tasmania achieves record tourism figures

More than one million visitors (1,007,000) arrived in Tasmania on regular air and sea services for the 12 months ending September 2013.

Announcing the record tourism figures, Tasmanian Tourism Minister Scott Bacon explained "this was a 15% increase on the previous year and is the first time that this milestone has been achieved without the help of cruise ship visitors.

"The latest Tasmanian Tourism Snapshot shows that total visitor expenditure during this period also increased to $1.51 billion, which was around 11% more than the same period in 2012."

Minister Bacon said that the latest figures also showed regional Tasmania was beginning to see a turnaround in visitors, with more people visiting the Southern, Northern, East Coast and the Cradle Coast regions.

Minister Bacon continued "tourism growth for the regions is showing double digit growth and this will bring significant benefits to our regional tourism businesses.

"It was especially pleasing to see more visitors coming from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland because these are the interstate markets targeted by the State Government's tourism marketing over the past year.

Minister Bacon said that the latest record figures showed what happens when world-class experiences, outstanding events and vastly improved air capacity are combined with focussed, creative and effective destination marketing.

He concluded "the Government invests around $11 million to market the state, and has added to this when opportunities have arisen such as targeting the Queensland market.

"We have also invested significantly in events, particularly in the traditionally quieter months, which is beginning to see returns as these figures demonstrate.

"The key factor has been getting the best return for our investment and using innovative and effective marketing strategies.

"There were also very encouraging signs of a recovery in sea travel over the last two quarters."
