Sydney Uni Swim School makes a difference
Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness has launched 'Access Swim' - a program especially designed for swimmers with disabilities who have difficulty integrating into mainstream lessons, at an affordable price.
The new not-for-profit program is divided into two components - a learn to swim component for those swimmers who are learning to swim and may need 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3 instructor to swimmer ratio because of individual needs; and a squad program for those swimmers who can swim 50 metres freestyle and may be having difficulties integrating into an able bodied swim squad.
This is an incredible initiative with swimmers set to benefit from the program in multiple ways, including increased confidence and self esteem, a healthy lifestyle, enjoying new ways of therapy and learning swim skills.
Meredith, the mother of Sarah, an eager swimmer with cerebral palsy is a strong advocate for Access Swim.
Meredith explains "Sarah desperately wants to learn to swim so she can swim in races like her brother and sister. Her swimming lesson is the highlight of her week, she loves being in the water. She absolutely loves swimming; you can see her smile and the joy on her face from across the pool.?
Swim coach Vanessa Smith, who developed the program states âAccess Swim provides a great opportunity for swimmers with a disability to get in the water and have a go.
âAccess Swim provides an opportunity for swimmers to interact with each other in a friendly, inclusive atmosphere and provides them with the ability to progress from learn to swim to squad swimmers. We are looking forward to welcoming more people into the pool.?
