Sydney Showground stadium prepares to host its first International cricket match
The stadium at the Sydney Showground is set to host its first international cricket match, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup following the Opening Celebration this Friday, 21st of February.
Although having previously hosted the HSBC Sydney 7s, X Games and Invictus Games House, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is the venue’s world cricket debut, with over 1.6 billion people expected to tune in to the live worldwide broadcast on Friday.
The venue will host five women’s matches following the Opening Celebration.
As one of the largest women’s sporting events to be staged in Australia, Chief Operating Officer, Darryl Jeffrey says it is an honour to be involved.
Jeffrey notes “our staff have been working around the clock to ensure the pitch is in prime condition, all preparations are locked in and we are ready to welcome some of cricket biggest stars.
“With such easy access to public transport, proximity to accommodation, numerous food outlets and function space available, the stadium is a fantastic location to celebrate Australian sport and it couldn’t get much bigger than a T20 World Cup.
“This event is a true milestone for Sydney Showground Stadium and a testament to how far the venue has come in just over twenty years."
The ten qualifying teams are Australia; England; New Zealand; West Indies, India; South Africa; Pakistan; Sri Lanka; Thailand and Bangladesh.
