Swimming program for Indigenous children secures top honour at Australian Sport, Recreation and Play Innovation Awards
A program that set out to increase the number of Aboriginal children learning swimming and water safety has been named as the overall winner of the 2023 Australian Sport, Recreation and Play Innovation Awards.
Presented yesterday at the National Sports and Physical Activity Convention in Melbourne, the Bambigi initiative, a charity organisation set up by teenager Piper Stewart, won first in the Young Innovator category before then securing the top award among 12 categories.
Bambigi, which means ‘to swim’ in Wiradjuri, the traditional Aboriginal language in the NSW town of Griffith, was created by Stewart at the age of 12 years when noticed that there was a need for to Aboriginal people to have access to essential skills and knowledge to be safer in and around water and reduce their drowning risk.
The Bambigi project sets out to fund a series of lessons for Aboriginal children of all ages including preschool, school age and teenage boys as a local solution to a national and global issue.
The Award was presented to Stewart by Patrick Walker, Chief Executive of the Australian Sports Foundation as part of this year’s NSC Oration.
With the largest ever number of submissions this year, all of the Award winners were commended for their exceptionally high standards.
Each category winner received a trophy and was then judged for the opportunity to be crowned the overall Australian Sport, Recreation and Play Innovation Award winner.
