Swimming Australia President moves to Chief Executive’s role at National Sports Tribunal

Michelle Gallen, Swimming Australia President is moving to the Chief Executive role at the National Sports Tribunal - an independent body responsible for settling complicated sports disputes, covering everything from doping violations to disciplinary matters, governance issues, bullying and discrimination.

Gallen was elevated to the president’s role less than a year ago replacing Tracy Stockwell.

The NST appointment requires Gallen to relinquish her position on the Swimming Australia Board before she starts her new role on 18th September.

Swimming Australia congratulates Gallen on her appointment and has now commenced the process of finding a successor, with the announcement of the new president to be made in due course.

Gallan shared “It has been an honour to be President of Swimming Australia and serve the broader swimming community, from the grassroots through to the elite level.

“Watching our swimmers dominate at the recent World Aquatics Championships and Para Swimming World Championships made Australia extremely proud and will help inspire the next generation of swimmers.”

“It was a difficult decision but I’m excited to be pursuing my other passion of sports law at the National Sports Tribunal. I will be watching with great investment and interest as our swimmers continue their preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics.”

Gallen replaces Kitty Chiller, who was acting NST Chief Executive since early this year despite having been sanctioned by the international gymnastics federation for her role in ‘judging irregularities” at a qualification event for the Tokyo Olympics.

Gallen has been appointed to the NST Chief Executive role by the Australian government for a five-year term, with Federal Sports Minister Anika Wells noting “Dr Gallen is an outstanding choice as the CEO of the Tribunal.”
