Suspended Modi has 15 days to defend himself
Lalit Modi has been suspended from all his posts in Indian cricket, including Chairman of the Indian Premier League, by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
UK newspaper The Guardian reports that he has 15 days to respond to the BCCI with explanations for a flood of allegations of financial impropriety in the IPL which emerged in the last two weeks. If the response is deemed 'unsatisfactory', the cricket body could strip him of all powers, at a meeting on 2nd May.
The accusations of financial impropriety run from rigged auctions for media rights, to bribes, betting corruption and money laundering.
Modi responded by stating "we have had some off-field unpleasant dramas only based on innuendo, half truths and motivated leaks from all kinds of sources.
"I assure you all decisions have been taken jointly by the governing council. Still, as the leader of the team, if there is any flouting of rules or any other financial irregularity, I will take full responsibility."
The BCCI announced Modi's suspension several hours after the 2010 IPL final played on Sunday, in which the Chennai Super Kings beat the Mumbai Indians.
Chirayu Amin, Vice-President of the BCCI and the president of the Baroda Cricket Association, has been appointed IPL interim Chairman.
