Survey reveals top outdoor activities, city by city
A survey of outdoor pastimes enjoyed by Australians, assessed on a city by city basis, shows that caravanning, followed by BMX and mountain biking, skydiving, scuba diving and rock climbing are the nation’s most popular activities.
The survey, by peer-to-peer motorhome rental platform SHAREaCAMPER, covered Australia’s 16 largest metropolitan areas, investigated each city’s preference in terms of outdoor activities and adventure sports.
The results showed that Brisbane came in as the most adventurous city per capita, followed by Wollongong and Hobart.
Findings included:
• The city most interested in caravanning was Melbourne, while the least interested city was Townsville.
• Wollongong came out as city the most interested in skydiving, bungy jumping and rock climbing, and the least interested city was found to be Melbourne.
• Hobart came top for windsurfing, zorbing, BMX and rafting.
• Cairns came top for trekking by a large margin, as well as for cave diving and scuba diving.
• Melbourne was also discovered to be the least interested city in rafting, cave diving, zorbing, and trekking. It’s relatively high position in the table overall is due to the city’s extremely high interest in caravanning.
NB: The ‘total’ column is based on the total adventurous searches per capita which includes the combined searches for 12 adventurous activities calculated into a monthly average and then divided per 100,000 citizens.
To compile the ranking, SHAREaCAMPER first chose 12 of the most popular adventurous activities including skydiving, rafting and caravanning. They researched the Google search volume for keywords associated with these activities in the previous 12 months. To arrive at the final results, they averaged their findings into a monthly figure and then divided this by 100,000 citizens.
These steps were taken to mitigate the effects of seasonal bias and to ensure fairness between cities of different sizes.
Founded in 2014, SHAREaCAMPER is the world’s first global camper sharing brand. The company vision is to bring the joy of camping to more people around the globe and to make camper rental more personal.
