Sunshine Coast Council starts work on Mooloolaba beachfront makeover
Works have begun to deliver an ocean viewing deck, relaxing new beachfront spaces, public artwork and modern public amenities at Mooloolaba’s foreshore.
The Sunshine Coast Regional Council program also includes replacement of a vertical rock seawall that dates back to the 1960s with a new terraced seawall to improve connectivity between the beach, foreshore and businesses while enhancing protection against climate change impacts.
Excited to see the project progress, Sunshine Coast Environment and Liveability Councillor, Tim Burns stated "this stage is a significant step in creating a world-class beachfront destination being delivered in partnership with the Federal and State governments and carried out by leading contractor SEE Group."
With his team starting construction, which will progress over four stages, SEE Group Chief Executive, Joel Barnes stated "the project will progressively shrink in size as works are completed, with revitalised areas reopening to the community as soon as possible."
With first stage construction to take place between through until the summer, Barnes noted "this first stage will see the removal of some of the existing structures. A key part of the project is to maximise sustainability outcomes by reusing and recycling demolished or removed materials where possible.”
The full revitalisation is expected to continue through to early 2027, with staged openings along the way.
Encouraging the community to continue to support local businesses throughout the revitalisation period, Visit Sunshine Coast Chief Executive, Matt Stoeckel advised "now more than ever, it’s important to continue visiting Mooloolaba.
“Our accommodation providers, local cafés and restaurants, boutiques and tourism operators are open and ready to welcome you… so come and find your Sunshine Moment at Mooloolaba.”
The Council has been working with local traders and the Business Activation Group on implementing the Business Activation Plan to support traders during construction. A range of exciting installations, activations and initiatives are planned. Keep updated by following Discover Mooloolaba.
