Sunshine Coast Council awarded for strategic parks planning
Sunshine Coast Council has been recognised for its strategic planning work, taking home an Award of Excellence at the Parks and Leisure Australia National Awards held during the International Parks and Leisure Congress in Melbourne last week.
The Council received the Strategic Planning Award in recognition of its Environment and Liveability Strategy, which provides a long-term strategic direction to guide growth and shape the Sunshine Coast for future generations.
Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the national award was a testament to council’s industry-leading work in integrated planning, specifically for our region’s parks and recreation spaces, commenting “outdoor spaces are at the heart of our communities and this award recognises the way council and the community work together to deliver solutions for our parks, sports grounds and recreation trails.
"Through the Environment and Liveability Strategy, we’re creating liveable spaces and places for people to live, work and play. We want all our residents to have a good quality of life, and our region’s sport and recreation facilities help to enable them to do so.”
Sunshine Coast Councillor Jenny McKay said the Environment and Liveability Strategy was delivering a pathway to a healthy environment and liveable Sunshine Coast.
Councillor McKay advised that “the Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. In coming years, we’ll face a range of challenges and opportunities - an increasing population, economic growth and a changing climate - and through our Environment and Liveability Strategy we’ll carefully balance our environment, economy and lifestyle.
"The strategy proactively informs our future approach and has clear targets for sport and recreation facilities.
"Over the past 12 months, since adopting the strategy, we’ve secured 44 hectares of land for future sport and recreation use, and most of this land is in the emerging communities.
"This award really is testimony to our great work and the passion of our people.
"Together we’re making the Sunshine Coast an outstanding place to live, with a network of great places and spaces.”
Parks and Leisure Australia's Nationla Awards showcase the excellent work of parks and recreation professionals, who deliver enormous benefit to our communities.
