Sunbather adapts to deliver energy savings for Huntingtower aquatic facility
The recently opened aquatic and recreation centre at Huntingtower School in Mount Waverley is demonstrating the highest standards in environmental sustainability.
The new facility, which features a heated 25 metre lap pool and a smaller heated teaching pool, dance studio and fitness, weights and spinning rooms, is being used not only by the school's staff and students, but also by other schools and community groups would also benefit from the building.
Swim Coach and Pool Manager Helen Aden explains that the environmentally focused building collects rain on its roof, which is then converted into water suitable for the pools. The pool's heating system produce electricity for the whole centre while Sunbather Super Blue Thermal Blankets and Automatic
Wall Mounted Rollers are set to save the centre thousands of dollars in running costs each year.
Aden explained that "it's very exciting now to be in the building and to think that it can generate its own electricity is amazing.
"We're looking at providing schools with learn-to-swim programs, and even older learners, and possibly adults too."
Aden said other design features of the centre included putting showers on the pool deck, not in the change rooms, to ensure they were used just for a rinse by swimmers, not a proper shower.
Remarkably, Sunbather Pool Technologies' thermal blankets and wall mounted rollers were not considered by the architect in the planning stage of this facility so Sunbather had to design and retrofit rollers to suit the building as it was being constructed.
The fixtures for the roller brackets fixed into hollow concrete planks, requiring their redesign to accommodate the Sunbather system, as Sunbather wall mounted motorised rollers are normally staggered on the wall to allow for blanket 'run out' and for ease of operation.
Overcoming the height over the starting blocks was also an obstacle that Sunbather Pool Technologies Engineer Dave Lindner B.Eng (Mech) adapted to, resulting in a satisfactory solution for both Sunbather and Huntingtower School.
Using a thermal analysis program developed by the University of NSW, Sunbather utilises a climatic data file for each client's location and performs an hour by hour thermal simulation of a pool's heat losses and heat input from gas and solar.
