Sugarworld waterpark set for Christmas holiday reopening

Renovations and improvements to Cairns' Sugarworld are nearing completion with the waterpark set to reopen for the Christmas school holidays.

The $5 million recconstruction project is installing new waterslides and, when complete, the waterpark will feature an open tube slide, a mat racing slide with four timed lanes, a family/childrens slide and a children's aqua play area with a tipping bucket and junior slides.

The waterpark's website explains that "the slides will no longer drop you into a pool, you will come to a halt in an open race and just step over the side.

"There will be better visibility all round (less trees dropping muck into the slides) so parents will be able to keep an eye on their kids, and the slides will be less claustrophobic."

Parts of the Edmonton attraction, including the resort pool, kids pool with kiddie slides and kiosk were operating during the recent Queensland School Holidays.

Cairns Regional Council's Sport and Recreation Team Leader, Tim Dendle told The Cairns Post that "we're definitely on target to open in mid-December as planned."

However, installation aqua play area, which the Council claims will be the biggest built by a local government, may not be completed until February.

Explaining the scale of the aqua play feature, Dendle added "there might be comparable ones at Dreamworld and Wet 'n' Wild but nothing this big has been installed by a council."
