Sports Vouchers save South Australian families $2.4 million

The South Australian Government’s Sports Voucher program has saved families more than $2.4 million and attracted thousands of new participants to sporting clubs.

The program, introduced after the 2014 South Australian election – has claimed as been a huge success with 49,630 vouchers redeemed in total across South Australia

Data shows that 38% of those who use the vouchers (almost 19,000 children) are using the vouchers are a new member of the sports club.

Every primary school student can claim the voucher which is a $50 subsidy towards the cost of a sports club fee or membership.

The program aims to reduce the cost of living for South Australian families and attract more young people to participate in sport.

Commenting on the program, South Australian Minister for Recreation and Sport Leon Bignell stated “the State Government has invested $7.7 million over four years for the Sports Voucher program and our intention is to reduce the cost of living for South Australian families and promote active lifestyles for people of all ages.

“All over the state, sports organisations have reported an increase in the number of primary school aged students joining their clubs.”

Among the successes, Minister Bignell added “Auskick has had a 10% increase in participation due to its fee being reduced to $15 because of the voucher.”

More than 1,300 clubs and organisations across the state have accepted the voucher with the three most popular sports being AFL, football and netball.

Minister Bignell concluded “sporting clubs are so important to local communities and thousands of children and their families are benefitting from this excellent initiative.

“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our sport and recreation clubs, and it is great to watch them get behind this fantastic program and help make it such a success.”

ABS data shows in 2012, more than 122,000 young people aged five to 14 years participated in at least one organised sport.
