Sports academy secures $750,000 to train regional athletes

The Western Australian Government has signed a three-year funding deal with the South West Academy of Sport (SWAS).

SWAS will receive $250,000 a year to help develop athletic talent in the region.

The funding is from the Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation's Regional Talent Development Network, which is backed by the Royalties for Regions scheme.

The Academy has helped produce two Olympians, five WA Institute of Sport scholarships holders and five athletes who have represented Australia.

Western Australian Regional Development Minister Terry Redman explained "it is important for regional athletes to have the same access to training and coaching as their metropolitan counterparts and not have to travel or move to Perth to develop their skills."

SWAS caters for some 70 athletes in AFL, netball, hockey, tennis, and cricket.

The Western Australian Government's Royalties for Regions provides $3.6 million for Regional Talent Development Network participants.
