Sport SA Slams Adelaide Oval Obsession
Sport SA, South Australiaâs peak sport industry body, is calling for equity in the allocation of funding for South Australiaâs sporting facilities beyond the $450 million for Adelaide Oval.
In a statement, 'Where can we play sport? sport is snubbed again', Sport SA, which represents 150 member organistions, expresses concern that âthe only sporting facility development in South Australia under discussion is Adelaide Oval (while) the provision and standard of community level facilities in the State are still not acceptable.
"Where is the community sporting infrastructure for the 805,000 adults and 129,000 children who participate in organised sport and physical recreation?"
Sport SA Chief Executive Jan Sutherland told Australasian Leisure Management of her organisation's disappointment with the lack of action in addressing not only the paucity of sporting facilities but also the ageing, declining community sporting facilities.
She commented "the State government has found significant funds for Adelaide Oval and we have not seen any announcements for the almost one million participants in community sport.
"It is time to provide quality places for sport at community level - South Australian participants in sport are denied the same opportunities through our lack of facilities and it is time that our ânewâ State government addresses this crucial element in our sporting involvement and well-being."
Sutherland believes that in "the first budget after the 2010 State Election, community sport should be elevated to receive the same allocation of funds for facility development as Adelaide Oval."
Sport SA is monitoring the sporting achievements of the State Labor Government to provide a report card to its member organisations and their 750,000 participants.
