Sport NZ to publish guidance on planning and operating affordable Sport and Recreation Facilities

Sport New Zealand is preparing for the mid-year release of a new Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Development Guide that will focus on the planning, design, building and operating of affordable facilities.

The guidance document aims to provide a step-by-step process and supporting information with a focus on the development of an indoor community aquatic and sports hall facility.

According to a Sport NZ statement, when completed it will be “for anyone looking to build or develop a community aquatic and or indoor sports facility with a particular focus on the 'whole of life’ financial sustainability of multi-sport centres that can meet a range of community needs and comply with best practice standards.”

The initial draft was made available to the sector for consultation and feedback in late 2015 and followed with a Peer Review of the Guide by a working group which included: Rob McGee of Auckland Council; David Allan of the Global Leisure Group; Julian Todd of Wellington Council; Paul Tredinnick of the Stadium 2000 Trust; Matthew Saunders of Northern Arena and John Filsell of Christchurch City Council.

Sport NZ explained that it “is grateful to this group for its input and continued support.”

Release of the guide forms part of Sport NZ’s commitmet to supporting local government, national, regional and local sports organisations to deliver a greater proportion of community sport and recreation facilities that are more affordable, efficient, effective and sustainable.

The guide is now having final edits and design work completed before being released in June 2016.
