SpinStar studio owner shares fitness and nutrition predictions for 2016

Pam Meyerowitz, owner of Melbourne-based boutique spin and rowing studio SpinStar, has shared what she believes are the key fitness and eating trends that will develop and emerge through 2016.

Meyerowitz sees seven key wellness trends emerging next year:

1. Clean eating is out. Moderation is in.
It’s very simple as too much of anything can be a bad thing and it is far better to have a diverse diet and eat a mix of proteins and vegetables in moderation.

As the US-based food writer Michael Pollan says “eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.”

2. More low impact options.
The ageing demographic in Australia means people with sore joints, feet, knees and hips will be looking for more low impact options. These include swimming, cycling, spin and indoor rowing. They are gentle on the joints and can torch calories.

3. Exercising to stay young.
High intensity interval training workouts keep you young (and) iIt’s proven by science. High intensity intervals help make the body’s powerhouses - mitochondria - more efficient and increase their numbers with benefits to our body. As a recent edition of ABC’s catalyst found, high intensity training can result in reduced blood pressure, a better response to insulin (therefore reduced risk of type 2 diabetes), stop skin sagging and help maintain and increase brain function.

4. Indoor rowing classes
It’s taking New York by storm according to the New York Times.

Rowing works about 84% of the body with every stroke. Some 60% of the effort comes from the legs working to push the body back. The arms and back are activated pulling the handle toward the chest. And the core is working to maintain the body’s stability.

5. Fitness data is helping people become healthy.
Insurer MLC is giving a 5% discount to people who can reach a fitness goal within 90-160 days using an intel Basis Peak Smartwatch while many companies are encouraging staff to track fitness.

A fit body and mind equals an efficient employee.

6. People searching for more efficient workouts.
People are working longer hours than ever before.

In September 2014 the average full-time employee worked 39 hours and 13 minutes per week. This year the figure increased by 16 minutes to 39 hours and 29 minutes a week. People are busy and they are seeking to get more exercise benefit in less time, and so classes that are 30-45 minutes long are very appealing.

7. Fitness aggregators (Fitness Passes/sharing).
These new apps are taking on the dominance of the gym chains and their direct debit based business models.

Operators such as Classpass, Bodypass, K-Fit, AnyClass , Guavapass and Fitness Calendar allow users to buy a subscription from between $69 and $99 a month which allows them access to boutique gyms and studios on up three occasions in a month.

No doubt with so many fitness aggregators in the market there will be consolidation with rumours abounding as to who will be next to merge with who!

At SpinStar Pam Meyerowitz has developed a completely new spin and rowing class which, when combined with chest and core mat work gives the ultimate low impact high intensity full body cardio and strength workout.
