Special first for Tasmanian Netball
In a move described as "a major breakthrough for Tasmanian sport", Tasmania's first trans-Tasman netball match has been played in Launceston.
Last night (Friday 7th February) saw the Northern Mystics and Melbourne Vixens meet at the Launceston Silverdome, as part of their pre-season for the 2014 ANZ Championships.
Welcoming local, national and international netball players and supporters at a breakfast event in Launceston, Tasmanian Premier Lara Giddings stated "Tasmania has attracted AFL roster games, consolidated and grown a magnificent international tennis tournament, and developed world-class stadiums at both ends of the state.
"Now, we've attracted trans-Tasman netball for the first time. Netball is the most popular sport for Tasmanian women in particular, so it's a great outcome for developing local game, as well as supporting our economy."
The Tasmanian Government has supported Netball Tasmania with funding for many years and provided $25,000 to help host the match, through Events Tasmania.
Netball Tasmania supports 11 affiliated associations and eight state league clubs. Tasmania has more than 18,000 netball participants and volunteers.
