South Australian Government cuts to hit arts and parks?
The South Australian Government's plans to reduce its spending by $1 billion look set to affect the State's arts and national parks.
According to Adelaide newspaper The Advertiser, the South Australian Government is considering the closure of the Carclew Youth Arts Centre to save more than $3 million in operating costs. It has also canvassed increasing national and conservation park entrance fees.
Other cuts include the closure of schools, hospitals and police stations.
Carclew Youth Arts is South Australia's peak arts body for people aged 26 and under. As explained on its website "Carclew transforms and nourishes creative minds, daring young people to strive for new ideas and opportunities.
"It impacts the present and ignites the future, connecting children and young people as artists and audiences to a world of possibilities."
Carclew's work includes:
• Funding programs for youth arts organisations working with children and young people
• Grants for arts projects and the development of young artists
• Scholarships and awards for exceptional arts practice
• Training and professional development for young artists, youth arts practitioners and youth arts organisations
• Programs and projects that encourage community participation in the arts
• Arts and education initiatives
• Youth arts advocacy
Carclew Youth Arts' Board was previously known as the South Australian Youth Arts Board (SAYAB).
Meanwhile the $535 million redevelopment of the Adelaide Oval is likely to require a further $100 million spending in related transport infrastructure.
South Australian Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure Deputy Chief Executive Rod Hook has conceded that about $15 million would be needed for a bus link at the Oval and $11 million for a car park south of the River Torrens. The expenses come in addition to a forecast $50 million underground car park and $38 million for a footbridge across the Torrens.
